An Uncomfortable History
An Uncomfortable History

Overview

An Uncomfortable History was conceived as a public intervention in New York City to confront the unresolved history of Korean women forced into sexual slavery during World War II. Despite extensive documentation, public awareness outside Korea remains limited and politically sensitive.
I translated a survivor’s painting into a life-size installation and placed it across high-traffic urban locations to interrupt everyday routines and provoke reflection. The activation was designed to create direct emotional confrontation in public space, generating conversation, solidarity, and recognition from advocacy organizations supporting survivors.
